October 4: Feast of St. Francis of Assisi

m last year's Blessing of the Animals at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Princeton, NJ.

I've captioned this picture,
"Our outfits match!"

  1. Been to a few animal blessings of various denominations. Is it just me or do dogs dominate these events? Rarely see a cat. Have seen a few large birds.

  2. Yes, dogs dominate because their humans make them attend. The cats who show up are clearly there because it's their choice.

  3. That being said I went to one of these in rural Virginia last year where a man brought his favorite sheep. As holy water was poured on its head, it started peeing out the back. Hilarious.

  4. We had a horse one year... it had a hard time walking on the terrazzo floor of the church. Made a donation too. We were reminded not to bring horses this year. All animals not on a leash must be in a carrier, which makes the dogs more visible.

  5. I was once in a Franciscan parish where teddy bears and other animal-inspired children's cuddlies were also blessed at the celebration. I'm of two minds about it, but their hearts were in the right place, I think.
